Revitalising our School Council

Description : The overriding priority was to establish a revitalised School Council, and in doing so, to introduce students to a democratic process. We wanted students to understand how elections could work and to learn how to make informed decisions. We also wanted to achieve Healthy School status. In the beginning the bulk of students were personally apathetic and disinclined to participate in the process.

The changes not just in terms of learning, but in terms of attitude and enthusiasm are evident throughout. Apart from the way the process is now conducted and understood by both adults and young people, the students are recognising that they have a role within the school which goes beyond the requirement to attend. Pupils actually want to be on the council and their expectations are realistic!
