Spring Day for Europe

08 March 2010

The aim of Spring Day for Europe 2010 is to “organise activities that help students think about Europe and express their views. The Spring Day web portal provides teachers with a rich package of supporting material that can easily be adapted to lessons. Schools can organise one or more Spring Day events and share their experiences through the portal.

Spring Day also helps develop creative learning experiences that encourage the use of ICT.”

In the UK, we tend to have a focus on the Citizenship education elements of Spring Day, with an emphasis of providing support and resources to enable teachers to deliver lessons on the EU and link them to domestic political education and events. So this year we will be pushing activities that tie in with the general election, events like mock elections in schools. There is also a big emphasis on ‘Back to School’, getting MEPs, MPs and VIPs back into schools to engage with young people. This we can do in the UK through Question Time-type events in the run up to the general elections. I hope you can appreciate the ‘synergies’ with what the EEP is aiming to do.

The official message of Spring Day is:

“Spring Day for Europe gives you and your students an exceptional opportunity to follow, understand and react to current European challenges, sharing your thoughts with decision-makers and a broad and dedicated community of schools.

This year, Spring Day is celebrating “Citizenship and Fundamental Rights” as major assets of European cultural and social identity. The campaign will facilitate activities, debates and interactions with key political and social actors, helping your students communicate their vision of Europe. Spring Day 2010 also promotes solidarity and social cohesion from an educational perspective, supporting the main goals of the European Year of Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion.
